Based on our results, we believe it is possible to electronically determine
the denomination of a piece of currency. We also believe it is possible to
evaluate whether or not a bill is a valid piece of currency, and even
whether or not it is a crude counterfeit. This experiment shows that in the
future, it will be easier to exchange money with its electronic counterpart,
and vice-versa.
The project ran into difficulties when we were confronted with money that
did not fit within our specifications. The $5 bill listed on the data page failed because of too much noise along one of
its edges. A bill that is sufficiently rotated will also have problems.
These problems can be solved by having a mechanical device which insures
that a bill is inserted properly, and without a large degree of rotation.
Such a device is already available on vending machines, and would not
provide much additional expense to a real world design.
