Why?


Money... What does money mean to you? It means the ability to purchase things. It means compensation for work that is performed. Money is a powerful and useful item, and one that denotes a civilized society.

Unfortunately, that doesn't do much in today's day and age. We live in a world of digital communication and digital financial transactions. In many places, money is nothing more than the transfer of bits from one computer to the next. Even our own Federal Reserve system deals with checks electronically. Therefore, it is essential that one be able to convert paper money to and from its electronic counterpart. Converting from the old bit bucket to paper is pretty easy, people do that all the time at ATMs. It's going backwards that causes problems.

For this reason, we chose to examine methods of analyzing and converting paper money to the digital variety, using image recognition techniques.
